Most quotes for an “AI WhatsApp chatbot” in Nigeria mix three different costs into one number, which makes them hard to compare. This guide separates them so you can see what you are really paying for, and what a fair price looks like in 2026.
The short answer
For a small or medium business, a properly managed AI assistant on WhatsApp usually costs:
- Setup: about ₦150,000 to ₦600,000 once, depending on how many questions, branches and integrations are involved.
- Monthly management: about ₦75,000 to ₦300,000, covering hosting, AI usage for normal volumes, updates and support.
- Meta message fees: paid in US dollars per template message, on top of the above. Many businesses pay little here because replies to customers inside the 24-hour window are free.
Cheap tools from ₦10,000 a month exist, but they are usually do-it-yourself menus or bots with no one keeping the answers up to date.
1. Setup: what you are paying for
Setup is mostly people time, not software. A good setup includes:
- Collecting your prices, hours, policies and the questions customers ask most.
- Writing and testing the answers, plus rules for when the AI must hand over to a person.
- Connecting the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) and completing Meta business verification.
- Training your staff to take over chats from a shared inbox.
If a quote has no setup fee, ask who writes and tests the answers. Usually the answer is you.
2. The monthly fee
The monthly fee should cover the AI model usage for normal volumes, the platform, monitoring and regular updates. An assistant that is not updated starts quoting last term’s fees or old prices, which damages trust faster than having no assistant at all.
3. Meta’s WhatsApp fees
Since July 2025, Meta charges per delivered template message, by category, in US dollars. At current estimates for Nigerian numbers:
- Marketing messages (promotions, offers): roughly US$0.06 each, about ₦82 at ₦1,330 to the dollar.
- Utility messages (reminders, receipts, order updates) sent outside the 24-hour window: roughly US$0.01 each, about ₦13.
- Utility templates inside the 24-hour window and normal replies to a customer who messaged you: free.
Meta reviews rates every quarter, so check your billing. To estimate your own monthly bill, use our WhatsApp API cost calculator.
4. Costs people forget
- Exchange rate: Meta and AI providers bill in dollars. Ask how your provider handles a big naira move.
- SMS for reminders: useful for customers who do not reply on WhatsApp.
- Your staff time: someone still needs to handle the chats the AI hands over.
Is it worth it?
Work it out from missed sales. If a school loses three admission enquiries a week because nobody replied at night, or a clinic misses ten bookings a month, the assistant usually pays for itself in the first month.
